Just a few short years ago, John Edwards was a presidential contender, a nice empty suit for hardworking Americans to cast their aspirations upon. He was a clean-cut U.S. Senator, and even today, the man is remembered for running a decent vice presidential campaign with John Kerry against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in 2004.
But I wouldn't trade places with John Edwards right now for all the whiskey in Ireland.
After many affair denials, John Edwards has finally admitted that he’s the father of his nearly two-year daughter – via a press release, while he’s in Haiti, posing for photo-ops with earthquake victims. Classy! Now the entire world knows that he left his cancer-stricken wife at home while he got a younger woman pregnant – and that he tried to cover up the truth for over two years.
In 2007, the National Enquirer reported that John Edwards was carrying on an affair with a campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter. Various right-wing blogs linked to the scanty coverage, but the mainstream press virtually ignored the story. Edwards was able to take advantage of this fact, calling the stories “made up” supermarket tabloid nonsense.
This guy’s political career is deader than a doornail, but the least he can do is to stand up and take responsibility for his actions. That's going to require more than just a press release.
