If you’re going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a tropical vacation, you want to make sure it’s worth every penny. But it’s not easy to choose a good location!

Thank your lucky stars for the Oyster Photo Fakeout blog.

Say you’re headed to Hawaii – the Aqua Aloha Surf resort sounds good. Or maybe you’re interested in Jamaica – the Rui Negril Club has good reviews. So does the South Beach Aqua hotel in Miami, and even the Sofitel in L.A.

Choosing a hotel based on information you find online is sketchy at best. When so many resorts and hotels are vying for your attention, it’s difficult to know which opinion to trust – especially with the anonymity of the Internet.

The Oyster Photo Fakeout blog offers great “real-life” photos that show the differences between hotel marketing photos (which are full of hot models and liberally Photoshopped) and cold, hard reality.

Don't take my word for it. Check out the Oyster Photo Fakeout blog – I’ve linked to it on the left. They’re brutally honest and the writing’s really funny. Some of their finds include:

- The Riu Negril Club pool: it’s not serene; it’s full of loud, drunk guests. Their “king-sized beds” are just two doubles slid together, too. Sexy.

- The Aqua Aloha Surf resort: their lima-bean pool is tiny, not luxurious.

- Aqua Hotel in Miami’s South Beach: their pool is roughly the size of a Jacuzzi. You can’t surf in it!

- The Sofitel L.A.: their pool is overshadowed by a huge Macy’s building, and you can clearly hear street noise, apparently! It’s not exactly a relaxing vacation spot.

Too bad I didn’t find the Oyster Photo Fakeout blog before I spent a bundle on my honeymoon. Let’s just say that I didn’t realize that my resort would be “clothing-optional” and that we were booked during “Senior Discount Week.” Yeah.

7 months ago: I was solicited to partake in a vacation package that I had supposedly already bought and paid for, and then just forgot about. It was a now or never deal to redeem my "free" vacation at the luxurious Mpphmumble Hilton Motel in Miami, followed by 6 days and nights in Cancun.
When I asked the salesman if the Hilton had a website, he said,"What, you've never heard of the Hilton?"
I told him I didn't know the Hilton had any motels under that name , and that I would have to check into it. He tried for half an hour to get my credit card number. I let him try, until, exasperated, he finally gave up.
