As we sit in the warmth of our homes a political force is at play on Capitol Hill. We afford the small luxuries of life because of the persistence, fortitude and success of Our Founding Forefathers. George Washington served in the military the majority of his life. A pivotal moment occurred in the years proceeding his statesmanship to the man we know today. Known by some to be "Landes Vater" interpreted as Father of the Land.
One of those predestined events occurred in 1770 when General George Washington came to grips with the high taxes the British were imposing. It is known by some scholars to be described as a very quick transition from living a quite life Mount Vernon to becoming the revolutionary leader that helped carry Virginia into the revolution.
We often here throughout our history books the famous quote that was used through this period "No taxation without representation" by the 13 colonies composed of British pioneers. They filed their grievances to King George the III. The Boston Tea Party culminated the due just actions of the provoked revolutionaries. Soon after King George the III stated in a letter to his prime minister“The die is now cast. The colonies must either submit or triumph.”
One of the many slogans that where taken up stemmed from George Washington's ill and just feelings of the tyrannical British Empire. Here is a letter he penned to Mrs. George William Fairfax, Sep. 12, 1758.
“At a time, when our lordly masters in Great Britain will be satisfied with nothing less than the deprivation of American freedom, it seems highly necessary that something should be done to avert the stroke, and maintain the liberty, which we have derived from our ancestors. But the manner of doing it, to answer the purpose effectually, is the point in question. That no man should scruple, or hesitate a moment, to use arms in defence of so valuable a blessing, on which all the good and evil of life depends, is clearly my opinion. Yet arms, I would beg leave to add, should be the last resource, the dernier resort. Addresses to the throne, and remonstrances to Parliament, we have already, it is said, proved the inefficacy of. How far, then, their attention to our rights and privileges is to be awakened or alarmed, by starving their trade and manufacturers, remains to be tried. “
The question we must ask ourselves is that can we ascertain the will of the people is properly and justly still represented in this day in age? Even though we cast a vote for our representation within the highest echelons of our Government our voice and ideals are stifled as a mere annoyance within those that are supposing to represent us. Any man or women can say I will do what is the will of the people but without credibility and the act of doing so it is just words.
In my own words, freedom is not a state of mind it is the action of being free.
